7 Myths of Being Spiritual
What passes as being spiritual? What must you be, do, or follow?
Here are 7 myths that people believe spiritual people must do or be.
By knowing these, we can achieve more and do more without being constrained.
You don’t have to be something you are not, allow yourself to be spiritual and fulfill your dreams.
1. Spiritual people should be Vegan
This will go against many spiritual ‘authorities’ and famous gurus when I say, “Vegetarianism is NOT necessary.”
You may be getting a healthy diet but being vegetarian does not mean you are spiritual, it means you have a vegan diet.
“Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man;
but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man” – (Matthew 15:11)
It is not the actual thing, but the intent that will affect our spiritual progress.
So if the man accidentally swallowed a chicken, thought to be a tofu replicate, there is no divine punishment and he is not demoted to being less than spiritual.
Food does not lower your vibration, only excess leads to unhealthiness and unhealthiness leads to a lower vibration.
This goes for drinking or swearing as well.
As long as it is done in awareness and love, and that it harms no one, do as you will.
2. Spiritual people are detaching from Life
When given the teachings of “Detachment”, it is not to mean to be detached from everything.
For how can you be detached to everything if you are part of everything?
Most of the time, detachment is used as a way to hide behind a facade so that his turmoils goes unnoticed.
The great example is the “I don’t care” attitude.
In reality, this person really does care and is trying to hide it by saying “I don’t care” while projecting a false sense of happiness.
With this way of living, the truth does not go away but returns once again deep from the unconscious.
The true way of detachment is not “I don’t care” but “this doesn’t bother me.”
When something doesn’t bother you, you can be present and detached at the same time.
King Janaka, the father of Sita, was a highly realized yogi.
He fulfilled both his familial and worldly responsibilities, even though he is spiritual.
He was not detached to all, but present with all.
Let yourself be vibrant in those who rejoice with you.
Spiritual life can accompany happiness and worldly responsibilities.
It is not materialism that moves away from spiritual, but the love of materialism that leads to excess.
You can have materialistic things and be spiritual as long as you always serve others when needed.
3. Spiritual path should lead to becoming an ascetic and having sexual abstinence
You don’t need to live in mountains.
All that requires is here within your own mind, not an external environment.
Asceticism is the severe discipline to avoid all pleasures and indulgences.
No true teacher has ever forbidden anyone from the things that are natural functions of the human body.
The Buddha has found that when you put your body on severe disciplines, it will lack the strength to continue.
Starving yourself, torturing yourself in meditation with no food or exercise, or beat your body so that you get rid of desires altogether does not end the desires.
If you starve yourself, your body will desire more food because of necessity.
Sex and food are natural and should not be suppressed, but controlled in balance by our way of thinking and acting.
4. Your Spiritual Path Will Be Easy
In many spiritual circles, they teach you that if you are on your right path that you will find things flow easily.
We believe that once we are on a spiritual path, that synchronicity will fly by like pigeons and everything will land on our shoulders.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Embarking on a spiritual journey would mean facing our fears, our beliefs, our desires, and our reality.
They say that respect is not freely given but is earned.
I’d say Bliss is not given, but something which you must earn.
It is okay to be on your spiritual path and still struggle.
But it is good to know that the struggle is worth the cause for your spiritual growth and spiritual progress.
5. Spiritual is woo woo
I love this one. When handled improperly, spiritual matters fall into superstition.
The woo woo are by those who likely had a short awakening or experiences, but could not explain them.
So words escape them and make them sound like babbling babies who are trying to speak for the first time, using words that have no understanding.
It is also by the people who avoid spiritual matters like the plague and labels anything that defeats their way of beliefs as woo woo.
Such attitude is mostly displayed in the West, hence, it isn’t surprising to find that the most mental, emotional, and spiritual problems occur in the same place.
Then of course there are the clever psychologists and businessman who jumped on the bandwagon because spiritual becomes a hot commodity.
You will know them by their fruits and labors.
Woo woo is a dismissive term for something that is false and without evidence.
But the spiritual path is the one that leads to truth and all the evidence are there if the seeker chooses to search for it.
But then again, relying on evidence on anything from Earth does not lead to truth, but to relative truth.
We may believe in mathematics, but not to believe that Pythagoras, whom our mathematics derives from, is also spiritual.
In addition, we believe in Gravity by Newton, but not to believe that Newton is also an alchemist and studies the occult (for which he got the inspiration of Gravity, not by a falling apple.)
This is what I find absurd, as woo woo.
6. Psychic powers = More spiritual
We each have a gift and sometimes that gift is not the same as others.
A musician has spirit. A doctor has spirit. A farmer has spirit.
Although one can have psychic powers to access their progress, it is not an indication that one is more spiritual than another.
Psychic powers mean you have psychic powers, and nothing more.
One could naturally be talented in some form of psychic powers, and others by practice.
If a musician rather spends his time crafting his strings to send a message to all, then he is no less spiritual than the man with spiritual powers.
If someone can astral travel and someone can’t, who is more spiritual?
For one can astral travel and not have love and one can have love without knowing how to astral travel.
7. Spirituality is a way to Escape Reality
So often spiritual matters become a way to escape into a fantasy and run from real issues.
But it is Not!
Spirituality is about being more in tune with reality.
To see things as they are, to be one with it, to raise awareness of reality itself.
The real escape from reality is to distract ourselves from ourselves and the world around us.
There are many studies claiming that a certain thing leads to addiction: drugs, games, sex, toys, religion, etc.
But it is not the actual thing that cause addiction, but the excess of it and overexposure that satisfies our pains as a distraction from reality.
Spirituality IS reality because it forces us to confront reality, thus, it cannot be escaping anywhere.
