Positive thinking not only works, it is a law.
Whatever you think about will come about.
“We become what we think about.” – Earl Nightingale
“The mind is everything. What you think you become.” – Buddha
But thinking positively is hard. I mean Really, really hard.
This is because we are programmed for years to think negatively.
Negative thinking helped us to survive and not get hurt.
But at the same time, it stops us from living our full potential.
The good news is that there are ways to trick your mind into thinking positively.
Here are the 7 ways to positive thinking.
1. Flip Your Question
You ask yourself questions all the time.
And your mind likes to answer them.
If you have a problem, you usually state the question in a way where you don’t get answers.
Why can’t I do this? How come nothing is working? Why is this happening?
Your mind doesn’t really know but it likes to spew out ANY answers, which are usually negative:
- Because you can’t do anything
- Because you are never meant to do this
- And because you’re stupid
The reason why we couldn’t solve our problem is because we are asking the wrong questions.
“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” – Albert Einstein
So a good trick of the mind is to flip the questions around.
Whatever you are asking, look for the opposite.
For example, you say that you want to get a girlfriend/boyfriend.
So you ask yourself, “how do I get a girlfriend/boyfriend?”
Then you are left with a million ways but none can give you want you want, leading to a series of other negative thoughts.
Now you flip it around.
Instead of thinking from “Me” to “girlfriend”, think “girlfriend” to “Me”.
So the question now is, “how can I find a girlfriend/boyfriend who wants someone like me?”
The process of thinking is entirely different – you are not focused on getting, you are focused on being.
If you flip the question, you’ll find a better way to find your solution.
2. Diet Hacking
Your diet has an immense effect on your way of thinking.
When your brain chemistry is not in balance, you will think negatively more than usual.
One tiny problem becomes a worry for a lifetime.
What you eat and drink and how much energy you have have an impact on your thinking today.
And what you ate last night can either help you be more positive or think negatively.
Usually you are not in control of your mood after eating.
Now here is the hack – kick up the adrenaline.
My mother was extremely tired one morning and nothing could get her up.
When I called her for an emergency, she jumped up with full health and vigor!
So no matter how tired or low you feel today, you can hack your way to enthusiasm simply by giving yourself a rush of emergency.
Tell yourself you will need to clean your room in 20 seconds!
Run in place really fast until your heart gets beating.
You’ll not only feel good but you will have that energy to think positively.
3. Have Gratitude for the Challenge
An event is an event.
It only has many meanings depending on how you look at it.
Through your lenses of reality, you can see it as something negative or something positive.
“Men are disturbed, not by things, but by the view they take of them.” – Epictetus
A negative event usually leaves us with a bitter frown.
When you thank your problem, you gave your situation a positive spin.
Every challenge is a way for the universe to show you what you don’t want.
And because of that, you can work your way onto better futures.
4. The Swish Pattern
One of the things I picked up from NLP is the Swish Pattern.
When you use the swish pattern, you change the negative image you have in your mind.
So if you have the image of “low self-esteem”, you see that image in your mind.
Then you take the opposite image, which is self-confidence, and do the swish pattern.
Bring the first image, then rapidly switch to the second image.
Each time you do it, you do it faster and faster.
Once you do this, the first image gets replaced with the second image in your subconscious mind.
This means that your “low self-esteem” image is replaced by “self-confidence” image.
5. Awareness Meditation
If you want to know what thoughts are floating in your mind, sit down and listen to your thoughts.
Become aware of what you are thinking.
Notice that none of those thoughts are at all positive.
As long as you have a thousand thoughts in your mind, you will continue to think negatively.
Clean those thoughts by becoming aware of them but not identifying with them.
The more you meditate, the less the thoughts will roam in your mind.
This allows you to have more energy to focus on what you want.
6. Categorize Your Life
When you are thinking negatively, most likely it comes from 3 areas in your life.
Understand those 3 areas and you will reach a more satisfied improvement.
What are the 3 areas of life?
- Wealth: Do you have enough to live by? Are you satisfied with where you are? Easy to pay your bills?
- Health: Are you physically fit? Do you have medical issues? What’s your diet?
- Relationship: Have a significant other? How well do you get along with family and friends?
These areas are at the top of anyone’s thoughts.
When one of the areas go south, usually the other area suffers as well.
So the trick is that improving one area of life will result in improving your overall happiness.
If you want to improve your health but you are filled with negative thoughts, then improve your relationship.
As you move along your relationship, you feel happier and this happiness fuels your health.
Also, when you get the momentum flowing in one area, the rest follows as well.
7. What Would My Hero Do?
Do you have a hero? Is there anyone you admire or aspire to become?
When you are in a dilemma, your thoughts become limited to your own thinking.
But what if you had the advice of someone who can think differently?
You can do that.
Ask yourself, “What would ____ (Hero) do in a time like this?”
So you tell yourself what would Steve Jobs, Michael Jackson, Benjamin Franklin, etc. do?
Your hero is any person you want to be, liked, aspire to become, a successful person, or a friend.
Don’t underestimate how powerful this is.
If available, watch how your hero talks and walks.
Look up their interviews and listen to them, pick up their mannerisms, and find how they overcame the struggles you had.
The Best Trick is Control
Tricking the mind to stay positive can help you, but it is an effort to be completely positive.
Some things in life will shake you to the core and sometimes it can’t be helped.
Being positive doesn’t have to mean optimistic happy-go-lucky attitude.
It can also be a quiet acceptance to oneself and a look for a positive future to come.
