“It all begins and ends in your mind. What you give power to, has power over you, if you allow it” – Leon Brown
Our mind is the driving force to unfold our reality. And the thing is, we are always using our mind every moment of our life.
Understanding how your mind works can result in better relationships, work, health and all aspects of your life.
How Your Mind Works
Dr. Thurman’s Fleets stick figure diagram tells us in basic terms.
We have a mind and a body, demonstrated by the diagram to the right. The body take actions to get results. However, the body is heavily influenced by the mind.
Your conscious and subconscious mind works together as a team. It can be your best friend or your worst enemy.
What is the Conscious and Subconscious Mind?
The mind is composed of two parts: conscious mind and the subconscious mind.
The conscious mind…
- is the thinking mind
- filters information
- holds one thought at a time
- makes decisions
- is your current awareness
The subconscious mind…
- runs on auto-pilot
- has no filters
- is where your beliefs, feelings and memories are
- magnifies our dominant thoughts
- has the greatest influence on your actions
An easier way to put it is when you imagine a dark room, your conscious mind is the flashlight and your subconscious mind is rest of the room.
Your Subconscious Mind
Your conscious mind is like the captain and your subconscious mind is the sailor. The sailor will do anything the captain asks for – whether it’s real or not.
Granted, your subconscious mind interprets your thoughts literally and bring it to you.
You, the captain, let your subconscious mind know what you want by your dominant thoughts. What you think all day is what your subconscious mind will do.
What is the Language of the Subconscious Mind
What is the language of the subconscious mind? How do I communicate with my subconscious mind?
The subconscious mind operates through images and feelings.
Since our conscious mind’s language is different from the subconscious mind, there’s 3 things we need to look for when communicating with the subconscious mind:
- It doesn’t process ‘negatives’
- It needs clear orders to follow
- It likes repetition to form a habit
So if I set a goal and communicated to my subconscious mind, “In 3 months, I have a new car”, despite your reasoning, your subconscious mind will serve it to you.
Your subconscious mind takes your thoughts and feelings and finds a way to put you into action where you will have a new car.
However, this won’t happen if you don’t believe it, if you doubt it, or if you have limiting beliefs.
Be careful what you wish for. If you are not specific, the subconscious mind will give you what you want but not exactly what you are looking for.
For instance, if you wish to have a house, you will put yourself in a position where you receive it but it will be a dog house. It’s still a house – just not exactly what you wanted.
How we program our Subconscious Beliefs
Most people receive information from their environment, whether it be their friends, family, or authority figure. When they take ideas from outside, they learned said beliefs.
These learned beliefs goes into the subconscious mind and your beliefs becomes your habit.
For example, if your friend told you that Nancy is very friendly and popular, and you take this opinion as truth, it will impress your subconscious mind.
What you impress your subconscious mind, you will receive. When you meet Nancy, you will act accordingly to your learned belief. You might be gracious, feel very good, and overall happy when around her.
On the other hand, if you are surrounded by negative influences, it will go to your subconscious mind when you accept it as truth. Then, your beliefs forms your habits and you take action accordingly.
If there is a belief different from what we have learned, we reject it even if truth is right in front of us. Unless we bring our beliefs to consciousness, our subconscious mind will run the show.
When you accept opinions and influences of your surroundings, it will impact the way you live your life.
Tips on using your mind
- Feed your thoughts with what you want and you will see what you want
- Change your beliefs and your results will change
- Surround yourself with who you want to become
When it comes to how the mind works, our thoughts and emotions form our beliefs. Our beliefs become our reality and we form our habits and actions based on our perception of reality.
