The 3 Stages of Self Realization
How much do you know yourself?
How much do you know you know yourself?
When the concept of self realization came about, the average person is surprised that there is a higher consciousness within them.
If you ask them this, they will insist they are fully aware of who they are.
But if you ask yourself, “Who am I?”, you’d realize that this reveal the fact that most people has but the first glimmering awareness of who they are.
The truth is that there is a higher form of consciousness inside all of us that grows in stages.
These stages lead to self realization and is the cornerstone of spiritual awakening.
Evolution of Consciousness
Science makes evolution based on natural selection.
But they only see evolution in appearance and not in consciousness.
There is an evolution in consciousness and all evolution is but a rise in consciousness / awareness.
From the very elementary life-forms to the most advanced beings, we all have a degree of consciousness.
Atoms have a faint awareness of other atoms. You know this because atoms know who to attract and who to repel from.
The lower animals (like insects) and plant life have an awareness of food source and predator source. They know what to move toward to and what to move away from.
Higher animals (like mammals) and animalistic man have an awareness of outside objects and some reasoning. Dogs, horses, monkeys and dolphins are an example of this consciousness.
The more advance beings the higher the consciousness.
Usually you can’t step up from your own stage of consciousness.
But Man has the opportunity to raise his consciousness to the next level.
The next level is not given in life, but something that is earned.
Here are the 3 stages of self realization we will go through in our spiritual awakening.
Stage 1: Physical Consciousness
We start out with an awareness of outside things received through the five physical senses and physical feelings.
You begin to notice that the dog is different from you, that you are not the dog but separate from the dog.
And from that you see that you have a body and this body is separate from the dog’s body.
Like the elephant who recognizes itself in the mirror, you recognize that you have a body.
This consciousness is simple. It is like an animal.
You know, but you don’t know how you know.
You just know that there is food and you need food. So you are going to get food.
Governed by your own instincts, you act upon your own nature.
You do have some reasoning, but so does every animal with cognition.
Stage 2: Mental Consciousness
As man advances, he becomes self-conscious.
It is an awareness of our own mind.
The majority of us are here in various degrees.
He recognizes that there is an “I” to him.
That there is a ‘knowing machine’ that makes him know, think, and is conscious of.
“Who is the thinker behind my thinking?”
This consciousness is complex.
You know, and you know that you know.
You are aware of your own actions, of your own nature, of your own morals.
Stage 3: Spiritual Consciousness
Only some are highly evolved to have an awareness of Spirit.
It’s difficult to describe it without first attaining it as it’s not some stimulus of the physical consciousness nor can it be explained with the highest development in mind.
But it can be stated as having an awareness of your own Self, rather than your personality.
When we speak of personality, we are talking about this:
- My name is Jake
- I have brown hair and blue eyes
- I’m a dancer
- I don’t like to be taken advantaged of
Personality is the awareness of your character that you are playing right now.
You are playing as Jake, the dancer.
And you play this character so well and earnestly that you forget who you really are.
But this character is only a mask that you use.
As you remove the mask, you are no longer Jake, the dancer.
When you shake off this illusion, you realize that you are something more than a character – something more than who you think you are.
Having spiritual consciousness means that you are above the limitations of personality.
You have an awareness that you are the center of consciousness and one with cosmic life.
You are more than a body or a mind. And You are a spirit in SPIRIT (Cosmic Consciousness).
No intellectual understanding will ever gain the experience of spiritual consciousness nor will agreeing to a spiritual teacher will make you come to this realization.
You must come to the realization yourself that you are an individual, meaning that you are one, a spiritual entity.
Spiritual consciousness is but a stepping stone to higher consciousness.
Yet, all is leading to Cosmic Consciousness.
The road to higher consciousness is slow and gradual.
In fact, all developments are like this.
You must grow naturally in your own time.
Like a plant that naturally grows and blooms into a flower.
But we have the choice, if we are ready, to shed off the personality to rise toward higher consciousness.
Evolution is a scale that goes up and down.
You can ascend but you can also descend according to the choices you make on your path.
In religion and spirituality, materialism is said to be the downward spiral to spiritual evolution.
There is a reason for that.
You are meant to evolve into a higher being.
Going back into physical consciousness by acting like an animal and all its tendencies will be a disservice to yourself and humanity.
“Thou art leaping about in thy garden and art well pleased with thyself; but giving up thy wisdom and following thy pleasure thou makest bad use of thy leapings” – Paracelsus
What this means is that the greater the consciousness, the greater your ability and connection to the universe.
So why descend and lose everything?
For the secret of power is that you must realize you are a spirit and the center point of all existence.
Do not dwell upon what stage you are in or dread about your spiritual progress.
Each of us are moving according to our own spiritual journey.
Your spiritual awakening, and self realization, will unfold when you are ready.
