What Does It Mean to Be Spiritual?
Many people are confused about what spiritual means.
Is spiritual what you make of it? Is it something you brand on your arm to display your uniqueness?
Do you have to do certain things, be a certain way, or live a certain life?
What does spiritual really mean?
To the uninitiated, spiritual is undefined and, yet, is thrown around for anything that seems mystical and religious.
Some would rather not let it be defined, lending it to a more mysterious quality.
Although what spiritual mean to you is a personal definition, what it means to be spiritual has a definite meaning.
I aim to clear the confusion so that we may be at ease in mind and spirit.
Root of Spiritual
To understand what is spiritual, we must understand the root of it.
What is “Spiritual?”
If you look closely, you will notice that the word “spiritual” has the word “Spirit” in it.
But What is Spirit?
That is where it holds the many unknowns of this world.
Spirit and Reality
To know spirit is to first understand our perception of reality.
We must first ask “What is reality?”
Each definition will tell you that reality is something real, fixed and permanent.
For millennium, the ancient mystics observed that reality is always changing.
The land of today no longer exists tomorrow. Life declines and another begins.
There’s always an action and reaction. A creation and destruction.
“Everything changes. Nothing is without change”
If all is changing, it cannot be real, fixed and permanent.
Thus, the reality which man sees is an illusion.
He sees that nothing is truly IS, but everything is becoming.
When we understand the principle of Polarity, we find that if reality as we know it is only moving, then there also exists the unmoved.
For every perspective, there exists an opposite to it: good/evil, up/down, light/dark, hot/cold, perfect/imperfect, the moved/the unmoved.
Thus, we can find that this reality is an outward manifestation from something before it, that behind every illusion is something real, fixed and permanent.
So Spirit is the polar opposite of Matter, the higher reality above our reality, the invisible and unity as opposed to visible and duality.
Spiritual But Not Religious
Many people, especially those who subscribe to materialism or humanism, do not distinguish between spiritual and religion.
Although they are nearly correlated, they are not together.
If you have to be in a religion to be spiritual, then those who don’t have a religion or have never seen a religious book would not have a chance for spiritual evolution.
In truth, spirituality precedes religion. Religion is “supposed” to uphold the teachings of Spirit.
For example, there is no Christianity without Jesus and there is no Buddhism without Buddha. Each religion was followed by one spiritual individual.
You cannot have religion without first being spiritual, but you do not need to be religious to be spiritual because religion is first born by being spiritual.
Of course, people nowadays fear being associated with the word “religion”.
It reminds them of the terrible religious wars and corrupted authority that was in power for several decades.
Also, the religion of today no longer holds the true teachings any more than they can challenge the new authority of the century – science.
To Be Or Not To Be Spiritual
You cannot NOT be spiritual for you already are.
It is not a matter of choosing or not choosing to be spiritual.
It is like saying, “How to be human?” Well, you already are.
Each one of us has a God particle that gives us consciousness.
And it is this consciousness that we are who we are, that we can be conscious of ourselves.
Consciousness is connected to Cosmic Consciousness just as much as any water is connected to the Ocean.
In Chinese Medicine, Spirit is known as “Shen”, which is translated as consciousness, emotions and thought or that which resides in the creative planes.
When we are looking for things that are spiritual, we look for things that are of a higher nature than our current reality.
Things that moves closer toward Cosmic Consciousness, to Divine Providence, to God.
Spiritual = of god or divine nature
Spiritual = things of higher reality
Spiritual = the immaterial and a more noble part of life
Are You Spiritual?
Everyone is spiritual whether they know it or not.
Because every human being is a Spirit.
What makes you spiritual is your awareness that you are spiritual.
