Why You Shouldn’t Practice Energy Without a Master
Are you thinking of training or practicing in energy work? Where does one start in their path to energy work?
Many times we like to research online or watch videos to learn about a particular energy exercise or technique. It is very easy for one to look for something in this modern age of information.
You can read a thousand theories of energy but it is often very different when putting the knowledge into practice.
That is why you shouldn’t practice energy without a master.
When I say master, I mean a legit instructor, supervisor or teacher. Someone who knows what they are doing and who can correct you when you do something wrong.
Especially when you go through more advanced stages, doing an energy practice wrong can bring you harm. But if an instructor can show you how to do it correctly, then not only will you attain great health but confidence as well.
It is the difference between a man fasting for 3 days and feeling weak and a man fasting for 3 days and can lift 145 lb weight with ease.
There are 3 important reasons why we shouldn’t dabble with energy alone.
It’s because its dangerous, it’s dangerous, and it’s dangerous. Now what are the reasons why it’s dangerous?
1. Wrong posture is dangerous
Energy training looks simple and it is simple.
Because it is so simple, it’s easy to make mistakes.
So one needs to be 100% correct in their posture.
Of course, we don’t think that we will make mistakes.
In the beginning of my training, I thought I had it all down. Then I was told that I should relax more, my shoulders weren’t aligned, my toes are too far out, I need to focus, and that I should focus and relax at the same time.
These little changes makes a huge difference in the postures.
If you don’t have correct posture, you may get away with it for awhile.
Before you know it, you would be practicing incorrect posture for 3 years and this will have serious side-effects.
Those who practice wrongly can vomit blood, damage internal organs, and have deformed bodily structure.
It will usually give you warning signs like nervousness, pain and heavy discomfort before you entirely ruin your energy body.
Even if you manage not to have any pain, you may still manifest internal blockages in your body accumulating with the force of energy. Then it would cause heavy internal injury.
This is because an energy training posture has to be right so the energy can flow easily through the body.
If you increase your energy into your body while the posture blocks certain pathways, then that increase of energy will do damage.
Imagine forming a wrong posture in such a way that you block energy coming into your left leg. While the increase of energy flows through the body, it will stop at your left leg. Then it gets bigger and bigger like a balloon. And what happens when a balloon gets too big?
Do you see the importance of having correct posture?
These can manifest themselves as tightness, injury, pain or lack of heat in specific area of the body.
This is why no matter how much you read or how much you see, you still have blind spots only an instructor can spot.
(You can substitute posture for method).
2. Wrong breathing is dangerous
The breath and mind are intimately connected. Each person’s mind is different.
You cannot simply apply a blanket formula to the right breathing pattern which gathers you energy.
Since breath and mind are connected and each person’s mind is different, you can assure that everyone has a different way of breathing.
The right breathing is unique to everyone. So one cannot copy another’s breathing pattern.
You might see something on the internet like “breathe this and that way” or “breathe in so many seconds, hold for so many seconds, and release for so many seconds”.
It doesn’t work that way.
This is why if you follow someone else’s breathing pattern you read somewhere, it will wreck your health and mind!
Breath is not only our connection to our mind but also the source of oxygen as it distributes it in the heart throughout the body.
If you breathe the wrong way for a long time, then it changes the way you handle the body.
It can manifest in chest muscle pains, neck pain, numb hands, asthma, heart or lung disease, anxiety, faintness, and coughing. Anything associated with breathing difficulties.
Lastly, wrong breathing lessens your energy. Not give more.
3. Performing techniques you can’t do is dangerous
Let’s say you want to perform finger push-ups. Can anyone do it?
One must develop not just the fingers and wrist but the strength of one’s abdominal core and balance as well.
In energy training, trying to perform technique without sufficient attributes is like doing finger push-ups with weak fingers and bad balance. In other words, your fingers will break and you will fall to the ground.
Usually it won’t give you as much harm. It will either do nothing and waste valuable time or it does something and harms you.
Anyone can give you an energy technique but to perform it adequately you will need certain attributes before it will work.
One of the example is in healing work.
You can learn all the best healing techniques in the world but if you are not healthy physically or mentally, then the technique doesn’t work. The result would not be healing but transferring one’s own dis-ease into another.
Does this mean you can never do energy work on your own?
If you must, then you should be very careful. This means that a 6 month training with a master is equivalent to 2 years of alone training. You will need to go slow, be watchful, and keep correcting yourself. After all, slow and steady wins the race.
It is like training in martial arts, sports, or surgery. Can you learn how to do surgery through a book? You can train by yourself but it is very likely that you will do it wrong for years. This is because energy work is an experiential process, not a technical or logical one.
So what can you do by yourself?
Qi Gong, translated as “Energy Work”, is one of the most popular and oldest form of Chinese energy practices. It includes slow gentle movements with mental concentration. Specifically, I mean the “8 Pieces of Brocade” which is also known as “Ba Duan Jin”.
This is the only safe way to increase your energy and health without a master. These simple exercises in Ba Duan Jin does little harm because you are not posturing for a long time. You don’t need to do any breathing work and won’t damage you even if you do it wrong. It is open to children, adult, and the elderly alike. Usually includes 8 forms, this piece of sequence can be learned from a book and only takes 8 – 10 minutes every morning.
